OUR HISTORY

Potato farming has been a part of our farmily heritage for many years. Jan's grandfather, Jan Vermue started potato farming in the northren part of Holland in the 1940's and Nynke's grandfather, Philippus Bakker started potato farming in Friesland in the 1950's.

By the 1970's Jan's parents, Albert and Coby Vermue and Nynke's parents Hendrik and Thea Bakker both took over their family farms from their parents. Each of the farms developed their own unique skills and specialties. Jan's parent's grew many diverse cash crops but their main focus became seed potato production. Nynke's parents carried on the farmily custom operation but specialized in growing seed potatoes.

Then in 1990, Nynke's parents immigated to Canada to start a new farm. The dream was to build a high generation seed farm that offered diverse potato varieties with exceptional quality. West Edmonton Seed Potatoes Ltd. was founded. Over the next twelve years WESP slowly grew from a forty acre seed farm to a one hundred and fifty acre seed farm with state of the art storage facilities and greenhouses to accomidate the production of its own high generation nuclear seed.

Then in 2002, the farm was sold to Jan and Nynke Vermue. Re-naming it West Edmonton Seed Potatoes (2002) Ltd, Jan and Nynke set forth to continue the companies reputation of excellence. Growing in acres and varieties, WESP diversified itself providing seed to numerous markets and customers.

Moving forward, Jan and Nynke draw on the families rich history in seed potato production and their own farming experience to grow their annual crops.
